Less than a year ago, Yahoo shutdown their search directory which was the largest at that time. The next big name DMOZ is also going to shut down their Open Directory Project. It was revealed in the DMOZ website two days back that they will no longer be available after March 14th 2017.
The AOL owned company is constructed and maintained by a community of volunteer editors. Anyone could submit a URL to the directory but only quality links were accepted. The reviewing and selection process was done by volunteer editors. The DMOZ was popular among the SEO and digital marketing professionals because of the high authority backlinks it created.
It is interesting to see efficient machines taking over the jobs that the humans were good at.
